Alek Wek | CR Fashion Book No. 11

The covers for the 11th issue of CR Fashion Book, the precocious brainchild of Carine Roitfeld, harken back to the year 1999 for a nostalgic nod to an era of fashion freedom. The black and white images feature five cover stars (including a throwback of Prince on Men’s CR) with varying ties to a year that is seminal to Roitfeld’s artistry. “1999 is about a spirit of independence, and there are very few independent thinkers left today. I think right now a lot of people are looking back to this period of time. Not only to find references or get ideas but to see who they were—how good they were—and hopefully see who they can be again,” she muses in an editor’s letter posted on the publication’s website. Lara Stone, captured by Steven Klein, returns to the book’s cover striking a power pose that emulates the action of tearing away her tulle bestrewed, jet-black gown. 90’s supermodel, Alek Wek, is also featured on the covers in a shot by Mario Sorrenti wearing a makeshift feather crown and a flowing, transparent frock. Both Wek and Sorrenti are major personifications of the issue’s theme. Sorrenti as the breakthrough photographer that emerged alongside Kate Moss with the momentous Calvin Klein campaign for the scent “Obsessed”, and Wek for her authoritative command of the runway, immortalizing herself as a tribe member of the true era of supermodels and trailblazing a path for models of color in the industry.
