With a background in engineering and over ten years in the fashion industry as a model, American designer and indigo dyer, Philip Huang started his eponymous label in 2016. Philip recognized his desire to collaborate with artisans and makers to create garments that would form long-lasting essentials to any wardrobe, male or female.
This desire would eventually manifest itself in a label that creates transitional pieces, meticulously constructed, fusing age-old traditions of the artisans of Thailand with contemporary design know-how, methods and materials. Having learnt about Thai indigo from Sakon Nakhon, a province in the Isan region of Thailand, Philip started his journey to Isan and working with villagers in the province to produce garments made with Sakon Nakhon Indigo. Today he collaborates with several villages in Isan to create textiles and a palette of natural dyes for his garments. Philip is interested in combining natural dyes and handcrafted artisanal fabrication with contemporary design and technological advances in textiles. pH.lab was launched in 2019 in both Bangkok and New York (on the rooftop of his Bushwick home and studio) and is the platform in which Philip experiments with natural dyes and collaborates with artists and other brands, since launching the lab he has collaborated with artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, THE FACE, House of Waris.
Prior to starting his brand, Philip was the first model of Chinese-origin to grace the runways of major international brands from Gucci to Dolce Gabbana. It was a photoshoot in L’Uomo Vogue shot by Greg Kadel and styled by Giovanna Battaglia which cemented his place in the modelling world, today he is considered one of the icons of the industry by models.com.
Philip lives between New York City and Bangkok with his family.
