Tommy Dorfman was born in Atlanta, GA where he developed a passion for acting and theater. Dorfman began his career after obtaining his Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Performance from Fordham University Lincoln Center. Dorfman plays ‘Ryan Shaver’ in the hit Netflix Original Series 13 Reasons Why, based on the best-selling novel written by Jay Asher and backed by Selena Gomez as the Executive Producer. The series is currently filming its second season, set to be released in 2018. Dorfman is additionally gearing up for the release of his first feature film, Fluidity.
Initially, Dorfman auditioned for different types of roles having the common insecurities about his sexuality in the entertainment industry but when the character “Ryan Shaver” was presented to him he was determined to tell his story.
The openly gay and recently married actor is passionate about speaking up for LGBTQIAPK+ rights, having a heavy involvement with the non-profit organization GLAAD. He was recently awarded the Lavendar Award for his outstanding contributions to and positive portrayal of the LGBTQIAPK+ community in film/TV at the annual OUTShineFilm Festival. Dorfman hopes to use his acting career as a platform through which to promote change and spread awareness and hope to other members of the community.
Since the 13 Reasons Why premiere, his social media platforms have grown exponentially allowing him to connect to a wider audience advocating love and acceptance to fans of all ages around the world.
